It is really difficult to describe the provincial capital of South Tyrol in just few words - almost impossible. Its history is just too wide and too many are its functions as capital city today: Bolzano is at the same time seat of the government, industrial, commerce and fair-centre as well as University city since 1997. The historic centre At the northern end you can see a beautiful building of 1512 in late gothic style, which once hosted the administration department of emperor Maximilian I. Today it is the seat of Sout Tyrolean Natural museum. On the southern end of Via Bottai you will get to piazza Municipio, which is surrounded by old buildings with beautifully adorned rococo-style fronts. This is also where the pitoresque "Via Portici"*, the heart of the city starts. This is where traditional shops and chic boutiques were lined up next to each other. *Bolzano's porticos. At the western end instead there's the famous and colourful fruit-market and just a few steps onward there's Via Museo, with the archeological museum, hosting the internationally known Ötzi Ice-man since 1998. Nightlife Bolzano's evenings are characterized by the recent opening of different bars, pubs and restaurants .. which gave new vitality and animation to the city centre..
